OpenAI is testing a new feature for ChatGPT that allows users to instruct the chatbot to remember specific information from previous conversations. This memory feature, initially available to hundreds of thousands of free and paid ChatGPT users, aims to enhance personalization and usefulness for the 100 million weekly users.
The feature enables ChatGPT to autonomously determine what information should be retained, potentially creating a detailed history for each user. While this could raise privacy concerns, it offers a way for internet companies to tailor user experiences.
Users with access to the feature can manage their stored information, delete details, or turn off the option entirely. OpenAI emphasizes that sensitive data won't be saved, and users can inquire about and control the information retained by ChatGPT. The memory feature can store a couple of thousand tokens of written information, roughly equivalent to 1,500 words.
