Kylian Mbappé found himself on the bench for Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 encounter against Stade de Reims on Sunday, continuing a recent trend as his departure from the club and potential transfer to Real Madrid loom large.
Throughout this season, the French international had been a regular starter for PSG in Ligue 1 matches until he expressed his desire to leave the club when his contract expires this summer.
Sources have revealed to ESPN that Mbappé is engaged in ongoing discussions with Real Madrid, with the Spanish club expressing optimism about securing his services.
PSG manager Luis Enrique previously emphasized the necessity for the club to adapt to life without Mbappé. In recent Ligue 1 fixtures, Mbappé has not completed the full 90 minutes, having been substituted early in the past two matches, making one appearance from the bench, and being an unused substitute for another.
On March 2, ESPN reported that Mbappé perceived these substitutions as a consequence of his decision to leave PSG at the end of the season. Sources also indicated that Mbappé met with Luis Enrique at the club's training facility last weekend to address tensions arising from his reduced playing time in Ligue 1.
Despite this, Mbappé played the entirety of both legs of PSG's Champions League round-of-16 tie against Real Sociedad, notably scoring twice in the second leg, which resulted in a 2-1 away victory.
Following Tuesday's match, Mbappé dismissed reports of a rift with Luis Enrique, stating, "There is no problem with him even if people think there is a problem. I have problems, but the coach is not one of them."
However, in PSG's encounter with Reims, Mbappé began the game on the bench, entering the field in the final 20 minutes of the 2-2 draw. His replacement, Goncalo Ramos, had already scored a goal in the first half.
