WhatsApp, the renowned instant messaging application known for its user-friendly interface and continuous feature updates, is now introducing support for passkeys on iOS for beta testers. This latest addition aims to enhance account verification options for users updating the app via TestFlight, as reported by WABetaInfo.
The feature, available in the "iOS 24.4.10.78" testing build, will soon reach a wider user base. Passkeys offer improved security and accessibility for WhatsApp accounts. While previously available in beta for Android users, this update enables iPhone users to configure passkeys by testing WhatsApp beta builds.
Passkeys can be found in the settings and are an optional feature that users can enable. The feature description highlights, "Access WhatsApp the same way you unlock your phone: with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode. Your passkey is safely stored in your password manager." Users also have the ability to revoke access from passkeys at any time.
Passkeys are securely stored on iCloud Keychain, allowing users to access their WhatsApp account using their device's passcode or biometrics, rather than the traditional six-digit code. For other devices, users can continue using the existing code method to log into WhatsApp. To start using the feature, users can update their beta app on their iOS device.
In addition to passkeys, WhatsApp is also working on a feature to manage third-party chats from apps other than WhatsApp. This feature enables users to disable third-party chats and view the app names from which these messages were received. However, implementation of this feature may be limited to the European Union due to recent regulations.
